For the most part, LCD TVs use less power than plasmas, CRTs and other types of TVs. But still, when I walk past my own 48-inch Vizio LCD TV, I feel the heat emanating from the screen. In fact, when I’ve plugged the TV into my Kill-a-watt electricity usage monitor, it was registering around 300 watts, or eating up as much energy as three 100-watt light bulbs!

Vizio, the Irvine TV company that began the trend of selling big TVs for lower prices, sa

id today that all of its TVs use less power by meeting or exceeding the new Energy Star 3.0 requirement for lower power consumption. In addition, it announced a new TV, the 32-inchEcoHD TV (pictured above), which uses 44 percent less energy than a typical 32-inch LCD HDTV.

Curious, I took a look at the new Energy Star 3.0 qualifications, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The maximum energy a 50-inch HDTV can use while powered on is 318 watts (click chart below for larger image).

Well, that’s about what my two-year-old TV was coming in at. So, I’m not sure how much energy Energy Star 3.0 TVs will truly save when compared to older LCD TVs. They were already more efficient than other TVs. But there are other requirements to get the logo, including using less than 1 watt in standby mode.

The EPA requires that TVs that get the 3.0 logo must be “30 percent more energy efficient than conventional models,” according to the EPA press release. Since the standard just started rolling out on Nov. 1, I’m sure we will see a ton of other TVs meeting these new energy requirements.

For Vizio, at least nine models exceed the 3.0 requirement by as much as 25 percent. Also, all of its 22-inch and 19-inch TVs use less energy than a conventional 60 Watt light bulb.

The new Vizio EcoTV is $499.99 and will be available online later this month at vizio.comand select stores like Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, Wal-Mart and Dell.com.

I am composting agian for the first time in a long time now that we have the space, it is going well so far.. My sister-in-law and I did an experiment, she did an open outside compost pile and I did a container compost. So far her’s is driving her nuts with flies and mine is doing fine. Although i think hers is otherwise doing great, any of you out there no much about the subject? With the world the way it is it seems selfish to me not to reuse and recycle everything we can.

I have been checking out sustainable housing for while now in hopes
that we will soon be able to build a sustainable home instead of
buying a non-efficient old home that is anything but green. I would like
to know what all you other ‘green’ junkies have been doing for housing
or to your current houses to help out the eco-effort. For my family and
others who have not purchased a home yet, I want to find the most cost
effective and best alternative to the traditional route of home buying.

So
far, I keep running across ‘Earthships’ and ‘Container Homes’. These
both seem like great ideas and obviously people like them, they both
have been being constructed for some time now. I would like to know if
any of you out there have experience with either of these. Here are the
links to both:

http://www.earthship.net/

http://www.containerhomes-info.com/

I
imagine there are a few different companies building container homes, although the process seems to be daunting to find one that has a
system down.. Earthships are built by one company that apparently has
been around for many years now..

I would love to hear your comments on this one

A full-page ad in a recent Time magazine, paid for by the Light of Light Foundation, recommends that you ask your doctor to check your neck for thyroid nodules — abnormal growths that form a lump in the thyroid gland. In fact, thyroid nodules have become the most common endocrine diagnosis in the United States, with thyroid cancer now being the fastest growing cancer diagnosis in the country.

Few thyroid nodules produce any symptoms, so people will usually only find them by chance. Far more often, they will be detected by your doctor during a routine physical exam or by an imaging study (ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance scan) that is looking at some other condition in the head or neck.

The likelihood of a thyroid nodule being cancerous is greater in those who are less than 20 years old or who are older than 70. The risk of this cancer is also higher in individuals who had undergone radiation of the head and neck, once a common treatment for acne.

How worried should you be if a nodule is found on your thyroid? Not very. About 90 percent to 95 percent of thyroid nodules are not cancerous. Also reassuring: Most common types of thyroid cancer are curable and rarely life-threatening. Nonetheless, nodules require further evaluation to determine whether cancer is present.

If a nodule is easily felt, the physician can usually evaluate it in the office under a local anesthetic by using a thin needle to perform an aspiration biopsy. A small needle is inserted into the nodule several times, each time in a different place, so that the cells withdrawn will be a representative sampling. For nodules that are difficult to feel, the biopsy is done using real-time ultrasound images to guide the needle into the lump. A pathologist then examines these cells under a microscope for cancer.

The biopsy of a thyroid nodule may be interpreted as being either benign, malignant, or indeterminate (suspicious). For benign nodules, only an occasional follow-up exam is required. Malignant nodules, however, are most often treated by removing nearly all of the thyroid gland. Removing the thyroid condemns the patient to a lifetime of taking thyroid hormone pills. The major risks of this surgery are the inadvertent removal of the parathyroid glands, which are closely associated with the thyroid, and damage to the laryngeal nerve.

For nodules considered suspicious, thyroid hormone pills may be administered in an attempt to suppress progression of possible cancer; more often, the suspicious nodules are removed surgically.

While some nodules can be felt easily, I have learned that many doctors are not adept at finding thyroid nodules that are located low down in the gland or buried deep in the thyroid tissue. Also, keep in mind that the utility of any fine-needle aspiration depends on the experience of the doctor who carries out the procedure and of the pathologist who examines the cells.
