There are several home cleaners that you can make for very little money that work great.. Here are a few that I have found that work well.
All Purpose Spray Cleaner
32oz spray bottle
1 cup plain white vinegar
Essential oil (optional)
Pour vinegar in spray bottle and fill remaining room with water, leaving about 1 inch of room at top. Add about 20-30 drops of essential oil if you want a nice scented cleaners; This will also help to cover the vinegar smell if you don’t like that. Most health food stores carry essential oils for around $6 a bottle and that should last you nearly a year for this.
Scrubbing cleaner
1 cup Baking soda
1 cup table salt
water
You will need to mix the water to this as you need it becuase it will not last more than a few hours once the water is mixed in.
Mix soda and salt together, this can be stored for use in the stain removing recipe or for later use in this recipe. Add water to amount need for current cleaning project, add water until moist but not runny. This is good for cleaning anything that needs a little abrasiveness. I have not found it to scratch or harm anything I have used it on, including; stainless steel, painted walls, plastics, floors, tiles and so on..
Stain remover
1 cup baking soda
1 cup table salt
all purpose cleaner from above recipe
This works great on many things; carpets, clothes, counters.. I even used it on my husbands ‘dry clean only’ items and it didn’t harm them at all. If you are primarily using it for clothes and ‘dry cleaning’ you might consider leaving the essential oil out of the ‘all purpose cleaner’ just as a precaution not to harm any items.
Mix dry ingredients together, these can be stored for later use as well. Spray area to be treated thoroughly with the all purpose cleaner, once the area is damp with cleaner, sprinkle a layer of the the dry mixture over the top and let it sit. For minor, easy to remove stains you should only have to let it sit for a few minutes. For tough, old or oily stains you will probably have to let it sit for hours and maybe over night. I was able to remove a year old, bad oil stain from our worn out carpet by letting this process sit over night. Once you are ready to remove the cleaner, pat the area gently with a damp cloth. If the cleaner has dried from leaving it longer you can then vacuum it up, you may need to gently rub any remaining dried powder with a damp cloth once you have vacuumed.
